The entire world has not faced a crisis of this magnitude since World War II. As nations are confronted with this pandemic let us as Christians use the powerful weapon of prayer and intercession as never before. The apostle James reminds us "the earnest (heartfelt and continued ) prayer of a righteous person makes tremendous power available (James 5:16 Amp )

The Bible likens prayer to incense (Rev 5:8 ) In Ex17: 8-15 Moses takes Aaron and Hur o the hilltop to pray and as long as his hands were lifted up Joshua and his army prevailed against the enemy. 'Vertical engagement in prayer led to 'horizontal' victory against the enemy. Let us employ the strategy our present enemy namely coronavirus and see it defeated.

Some prayer points in on this topic

The turning of the tide in regard to the pandemic

Speedy discovery and production of anti-virus vaccines

Our Prime Minister and her Cabinet for having to make difficult decisions (e.g. health and economic)

For all personnel involved in essential services, e.g: doctors and nurses and staff, food production and delivery, police etc

Everyone will conscientiously obey COVD-19 guidelines.

Fellow New Zealander's and families

Faced with such a danger, people will awaken to their need for God and in due course, this will provide all Christians great opportunities to share the gospel

I would like to specially commend to you Psalms 91, 27:1-6, 18:1-3 esp in the Passion Version. Our first place of security is a person: God Himself, He is our refuge our fortress. Secondly our home and following COVD-19 guidelines. Biblical precedents for sanitation guidelines, see Lev chs13-15

Speakers:

Chris Penk MP

Andy Foster Wellington City Councillor

Hon Jonathan Young MP

Ps Rasik Ranchord

The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Hamish Thomson.

Welcome

Hon Tim Macindoe warmly welcomed the attendees to Parliament, “Our Place”.

The Scripture Readings:

Old Testament: Psalm 139:13-18 - Melissa Lee MP

New Testament: Matt 5:13-16 - Joanna Hayes MP

Prayer Track 1 - End of Life Choice Bill

Chris Penk MP (Helensville)

There are 2 main areas covered in this bill - euthanasia and assisted suicide. However, it can be framed as compassion or choice. If framed as choice, is it an individual choice or choice as part of a family, community? What about coercion – where someone is put under pressure to “choose” to end their life?

Stages in Passing a Bill:

The first reading

The Select Committee –where submissions are received and spoken to by citizens (in this bill over 90 percent of submissions are opposed to the Bill.)

The second reading – confirmed to go forward or not (at this point 10 MPs are needed to reconsider their approval stance of this bill.) Amendments and rewording take place here. This bill is “not safe” in any way. Amendments may make it “less unsafe” but cannot make it “safe” at all.

Two more Select Committee sessions.

The third reading (November 2019). Ten MPs are needed to reconsider their approval stance to ensure its failure at this point.

Prayer Pointers:

Acknowledge the value of life.

That MPs understand and acknowledge the value of life, at all ages and stages of human development.

That MPs listen carefully to all vulnerable Kiwis, including the disabled, the elderly, the depressed and those of traditionally marginalised ethnicity.

That MPs work constructively on meaningful improvements to health care for those who are sick and dying.

Prayer Track 2: Local Body Elections (Nationwide)

Andy Foster Wellington City Councillor

We were encouraged to participate in these elections and have a say in who should be our Local Government leaders. Ballot papers will be posted out and the postal ballot closes on 12 October 2019.

City Council services cover many infrastructure areas that make our lives healthier and easier: eg: rubbish collection, water provision, housing, Civil Defence, street signage, street cleaning, recreation parks, libraries and transport (buses and cars). The Councils also plan a strategy for the future development of the cities over 10-30 years’ time. The Councils look after people’s needs, follow up on requests, and monitor and manage the delivery of all the different services. Voter participation was low during the previous election, so please encourage people to get informed, be involved and vote.

Prayer Pointers:

Voters are informed

Greater numbers of voter participation

Strong competent representative councils

Major issues facing your region

Other matters

Prayer Track 3: Abortion Legislation Update

Hon Jonathan Young MP (New Plymouth)

This bill strikes are the very heart of New Zealand and deny the miracle of creation in the conception of a baby. We need to pray for the women who find themselves pregnant and don’t know what to do. God is the Father to the fatherless.

This bill is about moving abortion from the Crimes Act into the area of Health Law. At the heart of this is the definition of the unborn child. There are several big inconsistencies. For instance, if a pregnant woman is attacked and the baby dies, it is considered as murder or manslaughter, with a sentence of 14 years jail!

Currently, the pregnant mother determines whether the unborn is special or not. It is not just life and death issues – this is a child made by God (cf Gen 25 and Ps 139). Another example of inconsistencies in the law, the Whanganui River has been given the status of a “legal person” to give the river protection rights. The rights of one should not extinguish the rights of another.

Submissions close on 19th September (midnight) and the Select Committee will report back on 8 February 2020. This Committee gets the full attention of the MPs on it. They are not assigned to other committees until this assignment is completed.

Prayer Pointers

That the NZ Parliament does not weaken the current thresholds as in the law

That the unborn child be recognised as a person with human rights

That Parliamentarians who supported the first reading to enable the Select Committee process, reconsider their vote at the second reading of the bill

Hon Alfred Ngaro MP closed the meeting with prayer.

All Prayer Points are on the Prayer@Parliament website (www.prayeratparliament.org.nz )

The next Prayer at Parliament will be in March 2020 and the date will be advised.

PRAYER TRACK 1 - Child Poverty in New Zealand

What is our dream for our children and young people? 70% do well, 20% suffer adversity and 10% find chronic toxic stress – across all areas but, in particular health and education. Family disadvantage affects children. This is real life for many, not statistics in a vacuum. See www.occ.govt.nz for more information.

Prayer Pointers

Pray for children, young people and their families living in disadvantage without warm, dry homes and regular good meals

Pray for wise and effective government policies

Pray that we will all take hold of opportunities such as helping with food banks, school breakfast programmes and programmes run by our churches

Pray for Judge Andrew Beecroft and his staff

PRAYER TRACK 2 - End of Life Choice Bill Update

This Bill had its second reading on Wednesday June 26, 2019. A record number of submissions (36k) have been received with 90% opposed to the Bill. Many community groups are opposed including the Disabled, the Elderly, Maori and Pacific, and other ethnicities. The bill passed it's second reading by 70 votes to 50 and will now go to the whole house for detailed scrutiny and amendments. Private members bills are debated every second Wednesday when the House is Sitting.

Prayer Pointers

For the value of life to be recognised and respected

Pray that we listen carefully to arguments and respond wisely

Encourage our local MP to vote against the Bill

Pray and work constructively on meaningful improvements to healthcare for those sick and dying.

PRAYER TRACK 3 - Members of Parliament

Ps Rasik encouraged the meeting to remember to pray for all in authority (1 Tim. 2 and Romans 13) as they are servants of God performing a function as ordained by God.

Prayer Pointers

Leaders of Parties

Christian MPs

MP in your electorate

MPs (whose name is on the paper given to people)

In attendance:

Hon Tim Macindoe (Parliamentary Host)

Jonathan Young MP

Joanne Hayes MP

Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki MP

Melissa Lee MP

Speakers

Sir Kim Workman

Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand

Ps Rasik Ranchord

The meeting was opened in prayer by Jonathan Young MP

Welcome
Hon Tim Macindoe warmly welcomed the attendees to Parliament, “our place”

The Scripture readings were as follows:
Old Testament : Psalm127:1-5 read by Joanne Hayes MP
New Testament : Matt 25:31-46 read by Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki MP

Prayer Track 1 : Prisoner Welfare - Sir Kim Workman

Ps Rasik outlined Sir Kim’s career milestones which have brought him to this point in his life. Congratulations were extended to Sir Kim on his receiving a knighthood in the recent New Year’s Honours. Sir Kim has been involved with restorative justice for a long time and recently his book on this subject was released in November 2018.

Sir Kim went on to talk about the huge input volunteers have made to the welfare of prisoners. Prison Fellowship as an initiative was started by Charles Colson in 1974 following his incarceration after the USA Watergate scandal.

Prisons should be part of civil society, not a private business. They are there to keep out people who do not need to be separated from society, and to ensure as many citizens as possible are involved. Volunteers have a significant effect on behaviour in prisons – on staff as well as prisoners, and can bring education, arts, life experience to those unable to participate in society generally.

The volunteer process needs to be relaxed. It has been tightened and it is now more difficult to get access to prisons. The Church must insist on being heard and should argue for volunteer rights and processes to visiting and involvement in prisons. Prisoners have also been asked what they want. We need to insist on volunteer involvement in prisons.

Prayer Points:

Prison officials and corrections staff to be upheld and honoured in their work

Prisoners will take opportunities offered them, to transform their lives for good

Corrections Volunteer Review will recommend increased opportunities for prison visitors to engage with prisoners and their whanau

Sir Kim Workman’s Leadership in this area

Prayer Track 2 : Royal Commission into Historical abuse in State Care and in the care of Faith-based Institutions - Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand

Ps Rasik outlined the Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand’s career and welcomed him to the platform.

Sir Anand Satyanand said he was delighted to accept this request for Prayer at Parliament March 2019. He acknowledged all parliamentary attendees and the people present in precincts of where government groups have gathered over many years. Democracy has been unbroken for 150 years with many representatives across the nation from many cultures. In 1839 the first settlers were living here alongside the Te Atiawa people 180 year ago. It is customary to acknowledge those who have passed on before us and respect is given to the late Gordon Copeland who died last year.

Over his career he has had many connections [with governments] including Ombudsman 1995 where he instituted the-first register of pecuniary interest 2006. He held this office from 2006-2011. The he became Governor-General of New Zealand. Following that appointment, Sir Anand Satyanand received an invitation to take up the role of Chair of the Royal Commission into Historical abuse in State Care and in the care of Faith-based Institutions.

The context for this Royal Commission is about the abuse of children and vulnerable others in the care of others. Similar Commissions have been set up in the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa. Two United Nations organisations have called for action from New Zealand, hence the Royal Commission.

Process: The Welfare Act 1925 allowed removal [of children] from families. Many thousands of children were removed and up to 70% of Maori children were taken away from their families. A Royal Commission is needed for the survivors. Their [learned] skills were often stealing and violence. Schools and psychiatric hospitals also were places of abuse and neglect. Other institutions such as Social Welfare, Disability, Police (and application of the Law), and places [homes] for care also were often not safe.

Methodology: To look back and establish what happened and then look forward, being survivor focused. While Maori and Pacific [are high numbers] are included, the Commission is not primarily concerned with ethnicity. Issues will be anominised [so people cannot be identified] for the public channel. Commissioners knowledge will be informed by various streams including media. How we will function will be a “made in NZ” way. An interim report will be available by November 2020 with a formal report provided 2 years after that. Please continue to pray us through this process.

The Commissioners are listed below in the Prayer Pointers

Prayer Pointers:

For the Chair, Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand

For other Royal Commissioners (Judge Coral Shaw, Ali’muamua Sandra Alofivae, Dr Andrew Erueti and Paul Gibson )

Prayer Track 3 Members of Parliament - Rasik Ranchord

Prayer at Parliament has been going for 20 years and is based on 1Timothy 2:12. Ps Rasik reported on the AMPP project, saying there were 9 Prayer Provinces covered, however a few more participants were needed to cover all the 120 members of Parliament. Those not currently appointed specific prayer participants are covered by Prayer Promoters and others, so every MP is being covered. There is no other nation where all their MPs are regularly prayed for as far as we know. Ps Rasik read Abraham Lincoln’s prayer of 1863, which was an inspiring document (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSSv25QxNm8). Let us ask God to send more Esthers and Mordecais into this place – our Parliament. We can be proud of our heritage as New Zealanders.

Prayer points:

Leaders of Parties

Christian MPs

AMPP Project

Wednesday Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast

After this portion of prayer, the attending MPs were asked to come forward and the meeting attendees prayed for them collectively.

It was also announced by Andrew Coster (Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police) that the new Chief Justice is Dame Helen Winkelmann, after the retirement of Dame Sian Elias and Andrew led us in prayer for the new Chief Justice.

Brian Caughley committed the Offering for expenses to the Lord.

Ps Hamish Thomson closed the meeting with prayer.

Prayer Points are on the website at http://www.prayeratparliament.org.nz

In attendance:

MP : Tim Macindoe (Parliamentary Host)

Speaker : Gordon Copeland

Speaker : Dr John Kliensman

Speaker : Ps Rasik Ranchord

Ps Hamish Thomson opened the meeting with prayer.

Hon Tim Macindoe welcomed the people to the meeting reminding us that this is our House of Representatives. He gave apologies from Members of Parliament, Hon Alfred Ngaro and Simeon Brown. “We appreciate that many of you have come some distance to be here and we are pleased and privileged to have you all come. This is your House – enjoy the atmosphere and the architecture. It reflects our Christian history in this place. To encourage you, there is a strong body of Christians with faith and worship in this place. Christian MPs meet for prayer on Wednesday mornings when The House is sitting.”

Ps Rasik also welcomed the people, saying it was an absolute joy to see everyone here. Unity is so important as is agreement in prayer. Those who were here for the first time were welcomed. Participants this time have come from the Manuwatu, Wairarapa and Wellington regions. Fourteen different denominations are represented tonight.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

New Testament: Psalm 139:13-18 By Ps Lalita Ranchord

New Testament: John 10: 1-10 By Hon Tim Macindoe

Prayer Track 1 : Abortion Law Review Update - Gordon Copeland

Gordon gave an insightful review of the Abortion Law status. The Government has asked the Law Commission to review the status of the Abortion Law and see what changes could be made by having a health focus instead of a legal focus.

The Abortion Law was passed in 1977 and came into effect in 1978. Since that time 500,000 lives have gone. This is equivalent to approximately the population of Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua and Masterton. When a baby is aborted it is not just one life but the potential of future generations lost. Amendments which have been proposed are:

A counselling service for those requesting a second opinion

This is not currently available and no alternatives to abortion currently being offered

There is a 33% higher chance of mental illness or depression in those who chose abortion

Women are not currently advised of this outcome

Women requesting an abortion should sign that this is their own free will decision

In Germany, where this is applied, the abortion rate is 2.5% lower than in NZ

Any coercion of the woman to abort a baby is to be made illegal

Where coercion to abort is applied, the woman’s life is changed forever

Any coercion by any other person should be illegal

Compassion and love is not currently part of the law – it is just a law. There is no compassion for the woman caught in this situation

Prayer Pointers

That the Law Commission be guided in their work

That independent counseling be provided to all women seeking an abortion (“informed consent” including alternatives)

That the woman’s own doctor must certify that a decision to abort is made by the woman of her own free will.

That coercion of the woman demanding abortion, by any other person, will be illegal

There was a March for Life in Wellington last year in December. There will be a March for Life again in Wellington on December 8th, 2018. Please spread this information and plan to attend, click here for more information.

Prayer Track 2 : End of Life Choice Bill Update - Dr John Kliensman

Dr Kliensman is the Director of the Nathaniel Centre (the Catholic Bioethics Centre). This organisation is a member of the Care Alliance which includes Christian and Professional Health organisations that are working to combat the End of Life Choice Bill. The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) is also opposed to this Bill.

There is a problem in NZ in end of life care. That is clear, particularly in rural areas that are not close to hospital or palliative care resources. No paths in this bill are caring for these patients.

This issue is not just about those who are dying. There is no requirement for the patient to seek treatment, nor does it provide for palliative care. The Bill does not give a choice, but does give permission. This poses a risk to vulnerable people who “pose a burden” (for others). The request for death by someone also impacts many others.

Laws are introduced in a context, our current context is: The rising rates of

Elder Abuse

Suicide

Social Isolation

Mental Illness

"Being a Burden"

Economic constraints

Fragmentation of families

The Christian response is compassion (to suffer with) and be an advocate for palliative care, alleviate suffering amid the challenges of ageism and able-ism. The Bill is currently with the Select Committee which is processing over 35,000 submissions.

Prayer Pointers:

Those who are dying and their families

Persons who live with disabilities and debilitating illness

Those who daily care for the dying and disabled and work to reduce their suffering

Openness, wisdom and courage for politicians

Prayer Track 3 : Members of Parliament - Rasik Ranchord

Ps Rasik read out part of the speech of the new Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Scott Morrison, who is an evangelical Christian. It was clear from the speech that Mr Morrison’s heart is for the people of Australia right across the spectrum. Mr Morrison said that Australia is NOT secular, but it IS free; that is freedom FOR religion, not freedom FROM religion.

With reference to the AMPP Project, Ps Rasik said that all information regarding this project is on the Prayer@Parliament website. Anyone who would like to join with other pray-ers to lift up members of parliament were most welcome to complete their profile on the website and they would be allocated a member of Parliament and a List Member to pray for, and put in touch with their local Prayer Promoter. Most areas are covered and where there are gaps, the Prayer Promoters cover these in the interim.

Prayer Pointers:

Leaders of Parties

Christian MPs

AMPP Project

Wednesday Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast

Romans 13 talks about a “servant of God”, in the sense that that person is fulfilling what God has ordained, ie, a particular function. Jeremiah also mentioned Nebuchadnezzar as a “servant of God”, and Cyrus (was called the anointed one) even though Cyrus did not acknowledge God.

There will be a Capital Prayer Breakfast on 8th November, 2018, at which Rev. Andrew White, the Vicar of Baghdad will speak to the group

Ps Rudy Oversluizen gave thanks for the offering which was given to cover expenses of the meeting.

Rev David Major closed the meeting with prayer.

Dave Mann

Ps Rasick Ranchord

Mr Gordon Copeland opened the meeting with prayer

Hon Tim Macindoe welcomed the people to the meeting saying we live in an amazing world, where a significant meeting is being held (President Trump and President Kim Jong-Un), New Zealand Womens sports are doing so well on the world stage and a new baby will be arriving soon. Here, we believe in prayer and that God loves us and calls us to be His disciples –as servant leadership in our communities – displaying compassion, goodness and mercy as we walk humbly before Him. We enjoy the relationships we form here and thank you for coming.

Ps Rasik also welcomed the people, saying, that in 50 years of ministry a key component has been as a bridge builder among churches. As the Body of Christ gathered here to pray for the nation, while we are finite, He is infinite! A welcome was also extended to Mr Kelvin Cloud, Deputy Mayor of Tauranga, and Professor Jonathon Boston, Professor of Policy Studies at the Victoria University of Wellington School of Government. A number of first time attendees were also recognised and welcomed.

Apologies were received from MPs Jonathon Young and Melissa Lee and a number of attendees who were unable to come.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

New Testament: Matt 24:1-7 Denise Lee

New Testament: Matt 24:8-14 Mark Mitchell

Old Testament: Isaiah 2:2-4 Joanne Hayes

Prayer Track 1 : End of Life Choice Bill Update - Simeon Brown MP

It is important to pray for these issues. The parliament is currently considering legislation related to Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia and submissions to the Justice Select committee, while now closed to receiving these, there has been a huge response of people wishing to contribute to this discussion.

As the bill is currently written, it is the most extreme type of legislation in the world. There are no safeguards – any age can request the ending of their life, under very loose terminology in the current bill. It is very risky for the vulnerable in our society.

Thirty-five thousand submissions have been received, along with three thousand nine hundred people requesting to speak to the Justice Select Committee. This is the largest response to ever have been received by a Select Committee. There have been an unprecedented number of individual submissions, with very few submissions made on pro forma templates. Of a 5% sample taken by the Select Committee Clerks, 89.4% are opposed to the bill.

Prayer Points

MPs sitting on the Justice Committee to have divine wisdom as they hear submissions from both sides

True compassion and love would guide those who make and hear submissions and that all would see this as Christ does

Sacredness of life would be protected for all, especially for the weak and vulnerable

Members of the Justice Committee are:

Raymond Huo (Chairperson)

Maggie Barry (Deputy)

Virginia Anderson

Chris Bishop

Mark Mitchell

Gregg O’Connor

Priyanca Radhaknrishna

Nick Smith

Prayer Track 2 : The Gospel in the 21st Century - Dave Mann Hope Project

The Gospel changes a nation. The Gospel causes people to change agendas and influences that shape the nation. The Hope Project is part of this influence for change.

The Hope Project intentionally encourages churches to have face to face conversations with people. Training can be given to ask great questions to start great conversations. We can learn how to do this! Jesus had a conversational approach – he never answered questions directly –he asked questions of those who pressed him with questions. The Gospel is best shared in conversation. It can start over the fence, and build towards a vision for a suburb, city and nation.

The Hope project began in 2012 when it was noticed there was no Christian Media coverage at Easter. New Zealand History cannot be understood outside of the Gospel. We need to put Christ into Christmas and Easter.

Prayer Pointers:

For pulpit and small group based equipping for a conversational outreach to become the annual habit of all Kiwi pastors

For God to raise up innovators with the ability to bring Christian messages to the public square

For our nation’s early missionary and bicultural story to be nationally known and esteemed

For the stories of the Christian origins of our nation’s most treasured values to be nationally known and esteemed

For Dave Mann and his team at The Hope Project

Prayer Track 3 AMPP Launch - Rasik Ranchord

Adopt a Member of Parliament for Prayer is the full name of AMPP Project. We want this process to be simple and sustainable and encourage anyone who is willing to commit to praying consistently, frequently and fervently with discretion, for their local electorate Member of Parliament and one List Member of Parliament (who may or may not be in their electorate. There are currently nine (9) prayer provinces with a Prayer Promoter identified for each province. Each Prayer Promoter is given a list of prayers in their area as their role is to encourage prayers and encourage more to engage in this worthwhile activity... Please talk to your minister/Pastors about this project. It is interdenominational in breadth and national in scope. Please let any other interested prayers know about this initiative. To find out more information and to enrol, please go to the Prayer at Parliament website.

Hon. Alfred Ngaro closed the meeting with prayer saying the Gospel is not an easy road and includes trial and tragedy. Have Your way with us and anoint our connection at home, work and in our communities. We pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the fire of God, and revival. Begin with us. Amen.

MPs

Tim Macindoe

Alfred Ngaro

Mark Mitchell

Denise Lee

Tim Macindoe, Host MP, welcomed the people to the meeting, giving honour to Chester Borrows and David Cunliffe who have been recognised in the New Year Honour list for services to New Zealand during their parliamentary service as MPs. The farewell for Hon Bill English was also being held at this time, and those colleagues in attendance would be leaving shortly to attend that function. Tim thanked everyone for coming to Prayer at Parliament as MPs found good encouragements from the gathering. Newcomers to the meeting from many places across New Zealand were also welcomed.

The meeting was reminded of the scripture from 1 Timothy 2, in relation to praying for leaders for good governance, welfare, spiritual direction, guidance, wisdom and a heart to serve as these are important areas for members of parliament. Ps Rasik Ranchord also welcomed all attendees and said that Prayer at Parliament had been going for 20 years. He reminded the meeting that the policy is “Prayer @ Parliament does not endorse any one party. It encourages Christians to be salt and light in every party”.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

Old Testament: Psalm 150 Mel McKenzie

New Testament: 1 Timothy 2:1-7 - Denise Lee

Ps Rasik Ranchord gave the preparation for prayer being:

The Word of God

The Spirit of God

Relevant information

Prayer Track 1 – The Face to the 52nd Parliament Hon Alfred Ngaro, MP

Alfred shared some personal thoughts on the effect that Prayer at Parliament has on the parliamentary environment, saying that he likened the presence of prayer and prayers having a cleaning effect in the place as the gathering invited the Spirit of God to come and move through the establishment and the corridors and processes which took place here. He shared Colossians 1:9 saying that the prayer for wisdom, knowledge and understanding were key elements to making good and lasting decisions that impact the national life.

The “face” of the 52nd Parliament is made up of 120 members across all parties – 74 men and 46 women; 65% are European, 22% Maori, 6% Pacific, and the rest, while New Zealand citizens, have come from other nations. It is important for the members to be supported by prayer in their decisions and debates, to be encouraged by visits from people in their electorates and to be challenged appropriately.

Prayer Points

Leaders of all parties

Cabinet Ministers

The Speaker of the House

Hon Bill English (retiring)

Prayer Track 2 – End of Life Choice Bill - Ms Tania Jones, Dr Bob Smith, Dr Rose Claridge

Christians have been involved in palliative care for a long time. It is good to encourage more conversations about end of life and how this can be managed well. Many medical staff are against this Bill and do not wish to be put into a position of having to make such decisions on behalf of another person. It is important that people contact/visit their local MPs to discuss this issue and encouragement them to vote “No”. Tania encouraged the meeting to stand with the Palliative Care movement which deals in “positive death”.

Dr Bob Smith, a retired General Physician, said there are many processes which ease the pain and distress of physical situations and give time for spiritual and emotional care for patients and family members. The Hospice movement has positively influenced the practices and support for the dying.

The End of Life Choice Bill is about assisted dying – death via lethal drugs. The New Zealand Medical Association considers this unethical euthanasia. Dying is a natural process which can be and is supported by medical means. If this Bill is passed it will dramatically change patient-doctor relationships.

Dr Rose Claridge, a medical registrar, had some pertinent questions:

What is a patient asking of a doctor?

When is a life worth living?

Since when did 6 years of training give a doctor the wisdom to know the value of a life?

Ms Jones said comfortable, supported passing is the norm in New Zealand. The Bill will open the door to assisted dying with difficult controls. Overseas experience shows that protections and safeguards will fail. What might we do differently? Compassion means “walking with those who suffer”.

Prayer Points

For those who are dying and their families

For those who care daily for the dying and disabled

For properly resourcing and up-skilling our medical practitioners to improve the quality and consistency of end of life care

For openness, wisdom and courage for our MPs as they consider the impacts of this Bill on our society & exercise their conscience vote

Prayer Track 3 AMPP Launch - Rasik Ranchord

This is a new project which is being launched this evening. It gives everyone an opportunity to become better engaged in their local electorate in relation to praying for the Members of Parliament who reside locally in electorate you live in.

Q1 - What does AMPP stand for?

He has asked MPs for their feedback within a very short time. It is therefore imperative that we respond immediately.

GUIDELINES
1. Keep it brief
2. Write in your own words (mass produced letters have little impact)
3. Be respectful
4. Here are some reasons for retaining the Former Version

HISTORICAL
1. History shapes every Nation: India is shaped by Hinduism; Thailand by Buddhism; Pakistan by Islam; Israel by Judaism. Each country uses its predominant faith in public prayers. NZ has been shaped by Christianity. We celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the coming of the gospel in 2014!
2. Some of our Statutory (i.e. mandated by Law not just custom) Holidays are Obviously Christian namely Easter and Christmas. Religious Days of no other Religion has been mandated by law in NZ.
3. Christianity is still the largest faith in NZ. According to the last Census (2013) Almost 45% of the population (almost 2 million) described themselves as Christians.
4. The former version has been used since 1962, over 50 years ago and some form of Christian prayer has been used since 1854!
5. Proposed revised prayers have been rejected 3 times in recent Parliamentary History under Speakers Jonathan Hunt, Margaret Wilson and David Carter in 2014.

OTHER REASONS - You can add other reasons

DISTRIBUTION
In a democracy numbers count, please circulate this information to:
1) Your Congregation
2) Ministers in your own denomination
3) Ministers’ associations in your area and appeal to them to act immediately.

PRAYER
Please saturate this issue with much prayer. Jesus said Christians are salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matt 5:13-14). New Zealand has a Christian Heritage which has not only blessed us spiritually but also politically, economically and socially (see Duet 28).

LET US ACT NOW TO STOP FURTHER EROSION OF OUR CHRISTIAN HERITAGE!

POST ELECTION REFLECTIONS

OUTCOME

The Election and Post-Election negotiations are over and we have a new Minority Coalition Government comprising Labour + NZ First with Confidence and Supply support from the Greens. National and ACT are now in the opposition.

POLICY

At the very outset I want to reinforce Prayer @Parliament Policy: We do not endorse any one party or parties. We want to promote Christian influence in every party.

REACTION

How are you reacting to the change of Government? It will depend on whether you supported (a) a Labour-led Government or (b) a National-led Government. Like the rest of NZ voter’s Christian voters will be in two camps. (a) Those who voted for a Labour-led Government will be very delighted with the outcome (b) those who voted for a National-led Government will be very disappointed!

PRE-ELECTION

As Christians we would have prayed for our preferred Governing Coalition. We would have voted and encouraged others (remember P.I.E.V.E. Project). Most of us have taken our duties as Christian citizens very seriously.

POST-ELECTION

I want to particularly address those who are in the ‘disappointed’ category. At the human level our part is to do what God requires us (Ro 13:1-7; 1 Tim 2:1-2). Having done that, we leave the final outcome in God’s hands, He is Sovereign. Those who govern us are called God’s servants 3 times in Rom 13. They are God’s servants, not necessarily in the sense in which we usually use that term namely followers of Christ doing ministry. They are God’s servants:

Not because they are necessarily Christians. When Paul wrote Romans 13 there were in all probability no Christians in government.

They are not God’s servants because they are the ones we voted for.

They are God’s servants because they are performing a God-ordained function of governing (Rom 13:2).

ELECTORAL SYSTEMS

There are no perfect electoral systems of government. Neither First Past the Post (FPP) nor Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) are perfect. Should the party that won the largest number of seats be given the first opportunity to form a government? This is a matter for intelligent discussion as well as other aspects e.g. coat-tailing, 5% threshold etc.

ELECTION SWINGS

It is important to keep things in perspective. In our recent history, Labour and its support partners governed for 9 years under Helen Clark. This was followed by 9 years of John Key and Bill English led government. The last time there was a 4-term Government (12 years) was 45 years ago under Holyoake (1960-1972). And now the pendulum has swung again. And it will swing again sometime in the future. You will get another opportunity in 3 years’ time.

We will all experience both delight and disappointment at various times, not only in the Election outcomes but also in so many other spheres of life. It is important at this time to take hold of Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else guard your heart for everything you do flows from it”. See also Psalm 42 and 43 and 1 Kings chapters 18 & 19. To those who supported Labour-led Government Congratulations! To those who supported a National-led Government Commiserations!

To be disappointed is human but we must not let disappointments degenerate into bitterness, cynicism, disillusionment and disengagement with the political process. Christians are resilient, you will bounce back!

PRAYER POINTERS

In Luke 18:1 Jesus told his disciples to always pray and not give up. Let us therefore pray for:

Our New Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, our second youngest PM in NZ and youngest female PM.

The New Cabinet and Ministers outside the Cabinet the full list of the Ministers will be posted shortly on the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s website at http://www.dpmc.govt.nz

The full list of MPs will be posted on the Parliamentary website at: http://www.parliament.govt.nz

Bill English. Mr English is a practicing Christian, a highly experienced politician having served for some 30 years in Parliament. He is a humble man and a decent human being. Pray fervently for him, his wife Mary and family during this very painful period and for wisdom about his future.

The outgoing Cabinet Ministers and Ministers outside the Cabinet. Some have served for three terms, others were new additions. This will be a very difficult and painful time of transition for them.

Pray for all remaining MPS that those in government and in the opposition, will all make constructive contributions for the welfare of NZ.

MP’s staff. Some will have to find employment serving MPS others may have to find jobs outside Parliament.

The Electoral Commission and its staff who do enormous amount of work behind the Scenes to ensure that our elections are conducted with integrity.

I have written to MPs especially those who have supported Prayer @ Parliament.

The final Prayer @ Parliament took place on 10 August 2017 in the Grand Hall of Parliament. It was very gratifying to see Christians from 16 Denominations, 50 Churches and 17 Towns, cities ranging from Auckland in the North to Christchurch in the South in near capacity numbers gather together to Pray for our Nation and especially the General Election on 23 September 2017.

The National Anthem was as usual sung with great pride and fervour. We have one of the best National Anthems in the world. Comprehensive prayer set to music.

The three prayer tracks focussed on the coming Election:

Prayer Track 1 was on “Challenges Candidates face at Election Time”. Input was from Hon Chester Borrows who has been in six Election Campaigns.

Prayer pointers:

Leaders of all parties

Address issues and not attack people

A "Clean" Campaign

Configuration of New Parliament

Prayer Track 2 was on Retiring MPs. About 15 MPs have indicated they are retiring. Two of them were Christian MPs who were strong supporters of Prayer @ Parliament, namely Hon Chester Borrows (after 12 years) and Hon Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga (after 9 years). We thank them for their contribution and wish them well as a new chapter opens up for them. The names of all 15 were read out for prayer.

Prayer Pointers:

Next Chapter

Families

Psychological Adjustments

Prayer Track 3 was on Voter Education and Mobilisation. Pastor Rasik Ranchord spoke about the alarming statistics in regard to voting in NZ. One million people did not vote in the last Election. About 750,000 eligible New Zealanders enrolled but did not vote. Another 250,000 did not even enroll, though it is required by law. Correlating Voting Statistic with Religious affiliation statistics from 2013 Census, the number of Christians who did not vote runs into hundreds of thousands. A very conservative figure would be 250,000! This is a serious dereliction of our civic duty. To address this issue Pastor Rasik has launched the PIEVE (rhymes with five) Project. PIEVE is an acronym for Prayer, Information, Enrollment, Voting, Encouraging others. This is a five-point plan of action to educate and mobilise Christians in relation to their civic responsibilities.

Prayer Pointers:

Greater voter turnout

Greater youth participation

Greater Christian participation

Christians will take their civic duties seriously

Christian leaders will educate their people re civic duties

Christian incumbents and new candidates

PIEVE Project

Resources:

The Bible Readings were done by Joanne Hayes MP and Lalita Ranchord. The evening concluded with the singing of “How Great Thou Art!” The Grand hall resounded with the praises of God’s people. The seat of power had been turned into an altar of prayer and praise!

Mr Andrew Coster, Assistant Commisioner of Police - Family Violence

Ps Rasik Ranchord, General Election - Part 2

The meeting opened with prayer from Comm. Garth McKenzie.

Hon Chester Borrows welcomed the people to the meeting and thanked them for their attendance, saying that the Members of Parliament who attend these gatherings are encouraged when they see how many come. He acknowledged the presence of his parliamentary colleagues and other guests, and thanked all those who were involved in making the meeting go so well. Chester apologised for having to leave straight away as he had another event to attend.

Ps Rasik welcomed the people also, acknowledging that many had travelled from other places across the country – Auckland, Whanganui, Wairarapa, and from other many places across the Central Region. Fourteen denominations were represented and fulfilled John 17 – that we might be as one as Jesus and the Father are one. God commands the blessing when we are in unity. There were 7 apologies received from Members of Parliament.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

Old Testament: 2 Chronicles 7:11-22 read by Tricia Caughley
New Testament: Matthew 22:15-22 and 1 Peter 2:13-17 read by Hon Sam Lotu-Iiga MP

Prayer Track 1 – The General Election: Part 1 –Hon Tim MacIndoe MP

Tim thanked the people for coming and encouraged us to take an intelligent interest in politics and exercise our right to vote. We are often inclined to take our right to vote for granted (and many New Zealanders don’t vote) but it is a right denied to tens of millions of people in many countries, often accompanied by unimaginable brutality, tyranny and flagrant violation of human rights. So let us pray for peace and democracy in those countries that are denied that which we take for granted.

We pray that good people will offer themselves as candidates for this election. There are many personal challenges that candidates and their families face during an election period, so please pray for a clean campaign without fear, for the pressures on family relationships and the scrutiny on candidates’ children. I appreciate the sacrifices that my wife and children have made to support me and enable me to serve my constituents in Hamilton West and our country.

Pray also that the [election campaign] meetings will be conducted fairly and the media’s coverage will focus on the issues that matter to the public and help us to make wise and informed decisions, rather than on trivia or scaremongering.

I thank God too for the Christ-centred, faithful witness and excellent service of my dear friends and colleagues, Hon Chester Borrows and Hon Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga who will retire from Parliament in just a few weeks. Truly they have done justly, loved mercy and walked humbly with our God. I will miss them!

There is much that we can and should pray for, and I firmly believe that good Christian folk can influence the election outcome through intelligent engagement, servant leadership and fervent prayer. So let us do just that! God bless you all.

Prayer Pointers:

Leaders of all parties

Address issues not attack people

For a clean campaign, without fear

For Retiring MPs – their transition period (David Cunliffe, Chester Borrows, Sam Lotu-Iiga, John Key)

Prayer Track 2 – Family Violence – Andrew Coster, Assistant Commissioner of Police, currently seconded to Ministry of Justice.

The statistics are shocking – a family violence incident happens once every 5 minutes! That is 100,000 incidents a year. However, only a quarter are actually reported. One in three women experience abuse (cost $4B a year). This is one of the highest rates in the developed world. Children are affected by witnessing violence in the home. When they are subjected to violence, they often use it themselves.

God’s desire is for harmonious family relationships. There is a big gap between reality and what is desired. We need to seek God to move in His power and authority in this area. He is able. Miracles can occur. Let us seek Him

We need to pray for policy makers who need to find a decision/pathway that will make a difference.

We need to pray for responders to help and assist groups who work in this area. Many incidents are not reported, but neighbours, friends, church people can make a difference.

We need to pray for those involved in such situations – family members and others, that generational patterns will be broken so the next generation will be spared the pain.

1 John 5:14-15: We can have confidence in asking God.

Prayer Pointers:

Policy makers – those who respond and those who help

Those involved in situations of family violence

Pray for Mike Bush, Commissioner of Police

Pray for Andrew Coster, Assistant Commissioner of Police and his work with the Justice Department.

Prayer Track 3 – General Election – Part 2 – Ps Rasik Ranchord

Ps Rasik shared the statistics he had discovered about the last election. These numbers are of concern. One million New Zealand citizens did not vote in the last election. Of those one million, 700,000 enrolled but didn’t vote, and 300,000 didn’t enrol. Out of that one million, 400,000 Christians did not exercise their right to vote!

What is the cause of this dereliction of duty? What do Christians fear about politics? For far too long the evangelical sector has neglected to engage in activity in the public arena. This needs to be addressed.

A number of pamphlets have been written – “God, Gospel and Government”, “Render to Caesar, Render to God”, “Vote Smart 2017” and are available on the downloads page of our website athttp://prayeratparliament.org.nz/downloads. These pamphlets outline our responsibilities as citizens in our nation to participate in the affairs of the nation. These pamphlets have been reviewed by some members of Parliament (cross parties) for accuracy of process, etc.

Ps Rasik will get in touch with pastors and heads of churches to encourage Christians to exercise their right to vote. It is a privilege to live here in New Zealand. Apathy and cynicism are not helpful. Salt must be shaken out. When we are engaged, we can make a difference.

Prayer Pointers:

Greater voter turn out

Christians will take their civic duties seriously

Christian leaders will educate their people in relation to their civic duties

Christian Members of Parliament who are standing again

New Christian candidates.

All Prayer Points are on the reports page of our website at:www.prayeratparliament.org.nz and we encorage you to continue to pray through them as the Holy Spirit leads you.

An offering was received for expenses and prayed over by Ps Paul White, Levin.

The next Prayer at Parliament will be on 10 August, 2017

The House will be rising on17 August for preparation for the election on 23 September, 2017.

Rasik thanked all who had contributed to the meeting, whether in front of or behind the scenes. Brian Caughley closed the meeting with prayer.

Old Testament: Isaiah 40:12-15,21-31 read by Jo Hayes

In the last election, One Million New Zealanders,
Who could have voted, Chose not to!

Prayer Track 1 – The General Election: Tim MacIndoe MP and Ps Rasik Ranchord

Ps Rasik highlighted the biblical perspective and the responsibility of believers to participate in the election of governmental authority (at all levels). His key points were:

The source of all authority is God. His authority is absolute.

God has delegated some of His authority to mankind and human institutions, to serve for a God-ordained purpose.

That purpose is for the promotion of good and the restraint of evil.

It is a privilege and a duty to vote, to give honour to those voted in and to pay the revenues and taxes required.

In the last election, 1 million New Zealanders, who could have voted, chose not to. We should appreciate what we are able to do in this regard. There are 1.7 million people identified as Christians (2013). Christian leaders need to teach their people about their civic responsibility and to take this privilege seriously. Tim, who has spent 9 years in Parliament, said it was great to live in a democracy. Citizens have the ability to contribute through giving input through the Select Committee process and can also participate in government through other pathways. No one party holds all the wisdom and values of good government.

The Party vote is the most important vote. Votes for the electorate candidates are important however voters need to be careful of media manipulation. Think about the important programmes that will impact on your life. The media are often after sensationalism. Tim urged us to attend our local electorate meetings and meet the candidates. He said to check the subject matter of the meeting and go and listen and meet the candidates, ask questions, stay and talk, and be informed. Please talk to the young people who are able to vote and help them understand how important it is for them to be involved. Many people have fought and died for democracy. We are to value it and participate in it.

Prayer Pointers:

Greater Voter turnout

That Christians will take their civic duties seriously

Leaders of all parties

Retiring MP – their transition period (David Cunliffe, Chester Borrows, Sam Lotu-Iiga, John Key)

Prayer Track 2 – the Work of the Children’s Commission: Judge Andrew Becroft

Judge Becroft began by describing a letter from the prophet Jeremiah to the captives living in Babylon (Jeremiah 29:1-7) which encouraged the people to actively seek the welfare of the place where they dwelt, because if that place prospers, the inhabitants would also prosper. He then talked about the lack of prosperity that many children (and families) live in. The statistics are sobering, covering child poverty and material welfare, results for Tamariki Maori and comparison between Maori and Pakeha children, and engagement of all children in education. Disadvantage is a key issue.

Prayer Pointers:

Abused and neglected children in their homes

Children who are removed from their homes

Marginalised and bullied children

Need more good, committed foster and respite care givers

Judge Andrew Becroft

Prayer Track 3 – Mayor and Councillors: Maureen Pugh, MP

Maureen served as Mayor of Westland District Council for 3 terms, prior to coming into Parliament. As a Mayor, you can be voted in for as many terms as the people decide – there is no limit on the number of terms. There is no job description, so a Mayor cannot be sacked! The sole employee of the Mayor is the Council Chief Executive. Elected roles are not clearly defined. The role of the Mayor is an advocacy role and the expectations of the community are huge. There is little family privacy, the media can be a friend or a foe, and the Mayor is always accessible, which impacts on personal and family life. Key qualities required are wisdom, grace, personal strength, knowledge of local government rules and regulations, and patience to handle the community and individuals, as well as a long term perspective. A Mayor also becomes a Justice of the Peace by virtue of the role.

Prayer Pointers:

Your Mayor

Your Councillors

Major issues in your city and district.

The next Prayer at Parliament will be in 8 June 2017.

The third and final Prayer at Parliament for 2017 will be held on 10 August as the House will be rising on the 17 August in preparation for the election on 23 September, 2017.

Graeme Sutherland prayed for the offering, which was taken up to cover expenses connected with the gathering.

Rasik thanked all who had contributed to the meeting, whether in front of or behind the scenes.

Brian Caughley closed the meeting with prayer.

In attendance:

MPs:

Hon Chester Borrows (Host MP)

Jonathan Young

Joanne Hayes MP

Alfred Ngaro

Speakers:

John Terris

Jonathan Fletcher

Alfred Ngaro

Gordon Copeland

Ps Rasik Ranchord

Jonathan Young opened the meeting with prayer, commenting before praying, about the current Treaty Negotiations and Prime Minister John Key’s address to the United Nations Security Council, adding that the people of God are in the House of the Nation tonight giving praise and worship to the Lord God, and asking God to bless the works of this Parliament and the ongoing work by New Zealand’s Prime Minister overseas. He also invoked Isaiah 11, asking that the Spirit of the Lord – the Seven Fold Spirit of the Lord – would be on those in the House, and that their work would bless the people of the nation, and that the works of reconciliation would bring a new future for the nation and create a unity here.

Hon Chester Borrows commented as he welcomed people to the House, that it was important to keep going “back to the well”. As parliamentarians it was hard to be regular in attendance at their local church, so opportunities to share and to pray with other believers are important. Recently Chester had hosted 70 Chinese pastors from across New Zealand. He had also received an extremely sobering report on Sudan, mainly from Christian organisations who are working in this country. He asked that the group do not under estimate their presence at Prayer at Parliament. It brought encouragement to the members of parliament who were able to attend the meetings.

Ps Rasik Ranchord also welcomed the people to the meeting and acknowledged that many had travelled good distances to be a part of Prayer at Parliament. Twelve cities were represented and the meeting was becoming a nationwide event.

Several apologies were received, including from Tim Macindoe, Mark Mitchell, Peter Paraone, and Ps Hamish Thompson. Ps Rasik also acknowledged Glyn Carpenter, of the NZ Christian Network who was at the meeting.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

Old Testament: Isaiah 58:6-12, Lalita Ranchord

New Testament: Romans 13: 1-7, Joanne Hayes

Ps Rasik‘s word of exhortation came from Luke 18 – prayer requires faith – and we need to keep doing it!

Prayer Track 1 –Local Government Elections

Dr John Terris reminisced a little over his time in Government and remembered the first Prayer Breakfast in Parliament. He reminded the meeting that participation in the local government elections is very important. Currently only 40% of eligible voters exercise their vote. A higher representation of young people is needed in the candidates, as well as a larger proportion of the population encouraged to vote and take a deeper interest in the selection and election of local government leaders. These local government entities and community boards have great influence over our daily lives. Local government leaders are accessible in the community and can champion local causes. Councils also give grants to local organisations.

Prayer Pointers:

A greater voting participation

That Christians will take their responsibilities seriously

That candidates of integrity, knowledge and experience and who are servant leaders will be elected.

Prayer Track 2– Social Ministry of the Church – Jonathan Fletcher, World Vision.

Jonathan is Head of Church Partnerships at World Vision. He talked about the wider concept of poverty. We talk about it but consider it unresolvable. At the base of poverty is broken relationships – broken relationships with God, ourselves, others, and creation equals poverty. When we look across the world we see evidence of broken relationships – nations, tribes, and people.

World Vision – some key achievements:

Child sponsorship – 45,000 workers, in 100 countries in troubled places.

The largest provider of clean water in the world

50 million people fed

1500 communities helped

What did Jesus mean when he said “make disciples”? What are the commands to teach? – Love God, and Love our Neighbour, because we are disciples!

Prayer Pointers:

World Vision and churches, social agencies

For protection for those working in dangerous places in the world and their families

For divine wisdom for strategies that are effective in social ministries.

Prayer Track 3: Members of Parliament and their Families.

MP Alfred Ngaro thanked the people for coming to Prayer at Parliament. Prayer at Parliament “cleaned” the atmosphere at Parliament by allowing the presence of God to be in this place. Alfred shared his journey into family life and the challenges that being in Parliament bring. Taking time to connect with his spouse and family members was important. Children have a particularly difficult time because the perception that people have of the politician can be reflected onto the children – the way people talk about the parent who is a politician, can be hard for the children. There is an expectation of the children towards the parent – sometimes these are hard for the family members to understand and manage. Please pray for the children – they are under pressure too.

Prayer pointers

Relationships –taking time to connect

Children –the perceptions etc that they hear about their parent from outside the family

Expectation of the children towards the parent

For MPs and their families, and Christian MPs

Hon Nikki Kaye, Minister for ACC has been diagnosed with breast cancer

Judge Andrew Becroft, Children’s Commissioner.

Mr Gordon Copeland closed the meeting in prayer.

Hon Chester Borrows (Host MP)

Mr David Cunliffe

Ms Melissa Lee

Speakers

Dr Peter Thirkell

Dr John Kliensman

Hon Chester Borrows MP

Ps Rasik Ranchord

Hon Chester Borrows, Host MP, welcomed the people to the meeting, giving apologies for MPs. Jonathan Young, Alfred Ngaro, Mark Mitchell and Tim Macindoe. Hon Chester Borrows acknowledged the presence of his parliamentary colleagues and Gordon Copeland, previously an MP. Newcomers to the meeting from many places across New Zealand were also welcomed and thanked for taking the time to come to this House.

Ps Rasik Ranchord also welcomed the people to the meeting and acknowledged that many had travelled good distances (for instance, from Tauranga, Auckland, Whanganui, Wairarapa, to name a few) to be part of Prayer at Parliament.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

Old Testament: Ps 67:1-7, Melissa Lee

New Testament: Eph 6:10-20, David Cunliffe

Ps Rasik‘s word of exhortation came from Luke 18 – where we are exhorted to pray and never give up.

Prayer Track 1 – Christians in the Market Place – Dr Peter Thirkell

Many Christians think that faith has implication only in the private life, with no effect in the market place. Peter Drucker said that business enterprises are the womb of society. There can be a calling to the market place, and to do work well. Pope John Paul II said that business has improved the lives of many. Tim Keller said “just do your job really, really well”. In the book “The Call”, Oz Guinness said “there is no call without a Caller”. Points to ponder:

People discover a sense of calling in their work (in business or the market place). Sustainable work distributes the fruits of labour in an equitable way. Michael Porter advised that not all profit is equal. NZ Post, Toyota NZ, Toyota Japan are all sustainable initiatives. CEO of Unilever said that Business can contribute to a society becoming more caring.

More businesses will discover sustainable business practices.

List of characteristics in business: (These keys are only found via the Gospel)

Courage

Temperance

Justice

Good judgment

Virtue to flourish in the market place. Look out for the affairs of others. Philippians 4 talks about whatever is of good report, think on these things.

Virtuous business is good business.

Pray for non profits/ charities

Pray for guidance, creativity, the ability to manage in a time of great change and that they will treat staff well. Choose the right yardstick when measuring business. Many lives have been beneficially affected by business.

Prayer Pointers:

A rediscovery of work as a calling

A sustainable and just economy

Virtue to flourish in the market place

Our leaders in business and the non profits.

Prayer Track 2– Euthanasia Debate: A Christian Perspective – Dr John Kliensman

Dr Kliensman is the Director of the Nathaniel Centre and Chair of the Care Alliance.

Euthanasia is a complex problem. Euthanasia is not a Christian response to the end of life issues. There are concerns in relation to palliative care in far flung areas, however euthanasia is not the answer to illness and pain etc.

Euthanasia is defined by “intention”. (Ref: Seales v Attorney General.) David Seymour’s bill would give euthanasia on demand and is focused on alleviating unbearable suffering. Belgium and Netherlands no longer have voluntary euthanasia. Others can make that request for those who cannot ask for it themselves. There has been a significant increase (700-800%) in assisted deaths in Belgium. People see it as being about physical pain but there are psychological concerns also. Where will it end?

The Christian response is to be compassionate – which means “to walk with”. We oppose suffering and continue to find ways to alleviate this. One way is to counter social isolation for the elderly, disable and lonely ones.

Prayer Pointers:

For those who are dying, and their families

For those who care daily for the dying and disabled

For the media whose work influences the public

For openness, wisdom and courage for politicians

Prayer Track 3: MPs and New Children’s Commissioner

The new Children’s Commissioner is Judge Andrew Becroft. Mr Becroft has been in the judiciary since 1996 when he was appointed as a District Court Judge. His appointment was a cross party agreement. Judge Becroft is a committed Christian.

Hon. Chester Borrows prayed for Judge Becroft and commended him to the meeting for continued upholding in prayer in his new role as the Children’s Commissioner.

Prayer pointers

For Leaders of all political parties

For the Cabinet

For Christian MP across all parties

Your Local MP

Judge Andrew Becroft, Children’s Commissioner.

All Prayer Points are on the Prayer@Parliament website (www.prayeratparliament.org.nz )

The next Prayer at Parliament will be in 22 September 2016.

Hamish Thompson closed the meeting with prayer.

Tim Macindoe, Host MP, welcomed the people to the meeting, giving apologies for Chester Burrowes MP. Jonathan Young, John Naylor and David Cunliffe also sent their apologies. Tim acknowledged the presence of his parliamentary colleagues and said he appreciated the support from Ps Rasik and Rasik’s ministry to MPs. Newcomers to the meeting from many places across New Zealand were also welcomed.

The Scripture readings were as follows:

The Spirit of God

Relevant information

Prayer Track 1 – Capt Ross Wardle on Euthanasia and the Assisted Suicide Debate

Capt Ross Wardle (Salvation Army) shared his insights on this debate. A key statement, in relation to compassion is that “compassion has never included the intentional termination of human life”. The following has been taken from Capt Wardle’s notes. They are worth thoughtful reading.

“Compassion requires quality care for all people to the end of their lives - including the terminally ill. Modern palliative care is a comprehensive package of medical, social and spiritual care. The careful selection and application of the medical tools available, to the specific needs of each person receiving care, means that much of the physical pain experienced by the terminally ill can be relieved effectively. We need to acknowledge, however, that we cannot yet guarantee every terminally ill person - pain free care.

What we can guarantee is that when people are supported emotionally, socially and spiritually, physical pain (and other forms of existential distress) can become more bearable. And so we can pray for a New Zealand society that defines compassion in this space as the willingness to spare no effort or resource in improving the level and extent of palliative care it offers.

From a Theological and Ethical Standpoint We Can Accept the Following:

It is not Euthanasia for health care professionals to withhold or withdraw medical treatment that only prolongs the dying process.

It is not suicide for people to choose to refuse - or terminate - medical treatment, and

To provide supportive care for the alleviation of pain and suffering (e.g., by way of analgesics) can be appropriate even if the dying process is shortened as a side effect. These three statements are entirely consistent with respect for the sanctity of life and the meaning of compassion.

Compassion has, however, never included the intentional termination of human life.”

Prayer Pointers:

Wisdom for the Health Select Committee.

Effective communication in relation to our position against Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

Adequate support for the terminally ill

Definition of human compassion

Definition of human dignity

Prayer Track 2: Roger Moses on Education, A Christian Perspective

A book recently read, “Against the Flow” by Prof John Lennox (about Daniel’s example living in Babylon and working in the corridors of power) and “The Manhattan Declaration” by Robert P George (and on YouTube) challenged Roger (and us) afresh about the need for Christians to live their faith.

We must be willing to embrace the cost of discipleship as we are called to be “unashamed of the Gospel”. Today’s society does not tolerate the expression of faith in the public arena very well.

Having been in Education for over 40 years, it is now that secular assumptions are portrayed as “reasonable” while Christian principles are portrayed as bigoted, etc.

Prayer Pointers:

That Christian principles be used to run schools

Christian Teachers – have a major influence on young lives

Christian students – will find other Christian students friends, will maintain their faith,

Continued Christian access to state schools. – eg Bible in Schools

Christian workers in the Ministry of Education

Special Report: Alfred Ngaro on the National Prayer Breakfast, USA

The USA National Prayer Breakfast (Presidential Brayer Breakfast) has been held every year since 1953. Alfred Ngaro, John Sacks and Martin Bell attended from New Zealand. Alfred gave a testimony of God’s provision and goodness in encouraging another person at the breakfast. Alfred himself was the answer to the prayers this person prayed some time ago, for a friend of Alfred’s. The statement “God Bless America” which is heard a great deal in the USA, is a statement of blessing which people speak over their country. And God has blessed the United States of America. We can bless our country, New Zealand, in this way. Let us also speak over New Zealand “God Bless New Zealand”!

There were 3,500 people at this year’s National Prayer Breakfast. President Obama spoke on 1 Tim 1:7; a Rabbi spoke on Is 58 v 6 about True fasting and Andrea Boccelli sang “Amazing Grace” by John Newton, which reminded Alfred of the work of William Wilberforce and his 20+ year battle against slavery; the extraordinary work of a Christian in the English parliament.

Prayer Track 3:

Item 1: Tim Macindoe on MPs and Their Workload

Tim is the MP for Hamilton West. It is an honour and privilege to serve Hamilton West, and work in Wellington as well. A 90 hour work week is normal. 40 hours (or so) (over 4 days) in Parliament in Wellington are long days involving speeches, question time, early and late meetings to get the work of the House achieved. We are here to serve.

Then there is the work of the Electorate from Friday to Sunday evening – 50 hours over 3 days. Work in the Electorate involves many community, multicultural and private events, as well as electorate office meetings and meetings with constituents, fitting around family time as well.

Item 2: Ps Rasik Ranchord on the Flag Referendum

The (Postal) Flag referendum is an important issue that requires the participation of the whole country. There are many reasons/opinions put forward for consideration in the media and via advertising. The people need to take the opportunity to vote.

Prayer pointers for both items 1 and 2:

For Leaders of all political parties

For Christian MP across all parties

Your Local MP

For a high level of participation by citizens in the Flag referendum.

Tricia Caughley closed the meeting with prayer.

The Next Prayer at Parliament is on Thursday 9th June 2016
The last one for the year is on Thursday 22nd September

MPs:

Chester Borrows

Tim MacIndoe

Jonathan Young

Su’a William Sio

Speakers:

Judge Andrew Becroft - Principal Youth Court Judge

HE Virginia Benavidez – Challenges of a Christian Diplomat

Murray Burton – Christian Education

Hon Chester Burrows welcomed the people. He advised that this particular day was his 10th anniversary of being an MP, and he appreciated the support from those who come to these Prayer @ Parliament events.

Ps Rasik Ranchord gave 3 Pillars of Prayer @ Parliament

The Word of God - informs our prayers

The Spirit of God - empowers our prayers

Relevant information - provides focus for our prayers

Prayer Track 1 – Challenges of a Christian Diplomat

Ps Rasik introduced the Ambassador, advising that she will be returning to the Philippines shortly as her assignment is nearly at an end. We are very glad God sent you to Wellington, New Zealand.

HE Virginia Benavidez – Philippines Ambassador to New Zealand

The Ambassador shared that she had been here since 2011, and her role as Ambassador covered the Pacific Island nations as well – Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, etc.

Being an ambassador had been a childhood dream. Virginia also realised that as a believer she was an ambassador for Christ first and foremost and the two roles – ambassador for Christ and ambassador for her nation – were very intertwined. There are 45k Filipinos here in New Zealand, making up 1% of the population. Servant leadership is at the core of the role.

While she has been here, the Ambassador has visited most parts of the country and the Islands where Filipinos have gathered. Her family have appreciated the opportunities afforded them during her assignment here.

Prayer Pointers:

For Diplomats, the families and the role in the community in the nation they come to.

Cabinet Ministers

Parliamentarians

The calling into the roles

Families of the Diplomats, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament

For the sovereignty of God to be over all they do

Prayer Track 2– Judge Andrew Becroft – Issues Facing Youth

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: 10 Issues facing young people .. for context for our prayer focus.

Family – very few serious youth offenders have stable two parent homes, and lack a positive mail role model in their lives. Family disadvantage, dysfunction, violence and transience usually of fundamental importance.

School attendance and Participation- increasing attendance and participation in school by young people is a key factor in reducing anti-social behaviour and offending. Not all truants/non-enrolled young people offend, but overwhelmingly majority of offenders are truants or not enrolled in school

Good “pro-social” friends – not isolated, loners

Need for Community “Connectedness” - “A kid in sport stays out of Court”. A young person involved in sport, or any organised positive community activity stays out of Youth Court. Such involvement in community activities build resilience, good friends, good role models, good discipline, fulfilment and success.

Income inequality; Socio-Economic Disadvantage – plays a part in what a child has access to.

Violence- Don’t forget bullying – no school is exempt. Female violence is on the rise. Why?

Cannabis Use /Alcohol Abuse – easy availability of high alcohol drinks for teens, whisky-laden drinks cheaper than water! Drugs and alcohol affect brain function significantly.

Maori over-representation in youth justice – disproportionate number of Maori apprehensions, unacceptable figures in any civilised community, new and culturally based approaches are needed

Red/ Blue – Mongrel Mob vs Black Power – gang affiliations, power and territory enclaves

Values up for grabs – Honour, Courage, Compassion, Common Sense, Dignity, Loyalty, Respect, Fairness – how are these learnt by the young – who teaches these to them? How do they get hold of them? Values are non-negotiable. How can we be the Lighthouse?

Prayer Pointers:

Parents, guardians, caregivers

Abused, damaged, neglected children

School, teachers

Police

Pray for good friends, youth ministry in churches providing ministry to youth outside the church, youth leadership, individuals touching lives in their locality, overcoming our reluctance to get involved, for Judge Becroft and other judiciary members, God to raise up others like him.

Prayer Track 3 – Murray Burton, Christian Education

Murray Burton, member of the Christian Education Commission.

Murray has been on the Board for 6-7 months, so is new to this particular Commission, but not new to Education. He is passionate about education, particularly Christian Education, and the Christian Community.

Christian education is now under threat. Jer 6:16… ask for the ancient paths…and find rest for your souls.

657 schools have Bible in Schools values education in operation. This is the biggest volunteer sector in New Zealand. This group are rapidly aging and new ones are needed to step up. Where in the western world can we shut a school for 30 minutes each week to give a gospel message? Each day there are 6 hours of secularist thinking being given to the children.

Christian values support the curriculum. The foundation of Law and Judiciary is based on Judeo-Christian values, we can’t evangelise, but we can sow truth and values. The Bible is full of humanity – broken people finding God. Bible stories are unpacked in the classroom.

The Christian community has gone from being a sleeping body to now a red-faced bigot. We need to engage and reason with those who don’t know about Christianity. Are we engaging in the battle or sitting on the sidelines? Are be bowing the knee and covering others in prayer?

Ps 145 – one generation passing on God’s deeds to the next generation…. Pass on the baton of Biblical values.

Prayer pointers:

Programs [in schools] to impact all who attend

The High Court hearing (Red Beach school challenging the Act re RE in their school – April 2016) decision will impact CEC/CRE in schools.

The relationships with School Principals, Boards of Trustees, staff and students

Accurate portrayal of Christian Education Commission to the wider public in the media.

Credibility of CRE teachers

Wisdom in prayer

Good communication skills for the teachers

Prayer for the 657 schools – teachers, engaging lessons, the school to respect what the teachers do

It is a watershed court case – prayer to turn back the secular tide

Recognise the values taught in RE classes are enduring values

The next Prayer at Parliament will be in March 2016.

Dear [First Name]

This report and photographs taken during the gathering are now available on the website...

Christians from over 50 churches representing many denominations from the Wellington Region, Wairarapa and other regions came together to pray for our central and local government leaders in the Grand Hall of Parliament. The praise was glorious, the input was enlightening and the prayers were powerful. The Gathering broke into loud applause as Ps Rasik Ranchord announced that the present Christian prayer that opens Parliamentary Business each day will be retained in its present form without any alterations.

Ps Rasik brought an exhortation on the biblical concept of wisdom. God commended Solomon when he got his priorities right and asked first and foremost for wisdom to govern his people. He sought God for political wisdom. God was so pleased with him that God also gave him fame and wealth and long life as fringe benefits!

The High Commissioner for Samoa HE Leasi Papali'i Tommy Scanlan and HE Virginia Benavidez the Philippines Ambassador gave the Bible Readings on the theme of wisdom.

Prayer Track 1: Party Leaders/Ministers, Speakers/Party Whips

Tim Macindoe the Senior Government whip and MP for Hamilton West shared about the duties of a whip and the challenges they face. The whip is a cross between a regimental sergeant major and a parish priest! Whips keep a eye on the finances, keeping MPs in the House so that everyone does not go on leave from the House at the same time or be absent unnecessarily. He mentioned that there are additional pressures for all MPs in being away from their families.

Prayer Focus: Leaders of all parties, Ministers, Speaker and his Team, Party Whips.

Prayer Track 2: Duties and Challenges facing MPs.

Gordon Copeland who was in Parliament for 6 years as a list MP shared about a typical week in an MP's life.

Hon Chester Borrows, MP for Whanganui shared the challenges facing an eletorate MP. He said the challenges facing electorate MPs are constant. One has to always be prepared to listen and note the concerns of the members of your electorate.

Prayer Focus: Good health for MPs/Family Life of MPs/ Lonely Wives/ Time to relax etc.

Prayer Track 3: Wellington Region Super City Proposal.

John Terris who had been an MP for 12 years and a former Mayor of Lower Hutt city for 9 years made the input. Proponents and opponents need to come to a balanced position between rationalisation and preserving local democracy.

Prayer Focus: The Local Government Commission/Quality Debate/Goodwill between opponents and proponents of the proposal.

The Hall was filled with praise with the people singing a concluding Hymn, ‘How Great Thou Art’!

The next Prayer @ Parliament Gatherings are scheduled for 4 June and 17 September 2015.

The input was from Ross Robertson who retired at the last election after 27 years in Parliament. He was an Assistant Speaker of the House for 9 years. He continues to be passionate about a Code of Ethics for MPs. His member’s Bill has yet to be drawn from the Ballot. It has now been adopted by Poto Williams MP.

Prayer focus was on –

We prayed for the event as well as for Christian MPs, Electorate MPs, and new MPs. There are some 27 new MPs in this 51st Parliament.

A special feature of this event was the participation of the Filipino Community Choir. “Glyn Carpenter, the National Director of NZ Christian Network closed in prayer.

The Convener recommended two resources to educate Christians regarding their engagement in the Public Square:

1. Why Christians need to be involved in Government?

PRAYER TRACK 1: Insights From Eric Roy MP (Retiring)

Eric Roy MP (Deputy Speaker)

Eric is retiring after 18 years in Parliament. I asked him to share his insights.

“God answers prayer! Testimonies: (1) I will be 66 tomorrow. When I was 49 I collapsed and had inoperable lymph cancer. I was told I had a 20% chance of surviving. People prayed. We applied James 5:13-16. This passage is very important! We need to pray and praise God; confess sin and get right with God; and call for the elders of the church. I had chemotherapy, and I asked to be given 50% more than the normal maximum because I believed this was the right thing to do. I sought God and exercised my faith positively. It was a spiritual battle too. I’m still alive today, 17 years later! (2) Before my granddaughter was born it was found she had the umbilical cord wrapped 7 times round her neck and it was thought she would be born with severe problems. She wasn't; and she has gone on to achieve well! (3) My son joined a cult in Australia and cut off all communication with our family. He has now severed contact with the cult and restored communication with us.

As a nation we have lost our way. MPs reflect or represent their nation, so if we have a lost nation we will lose the way in Parliament/Government too. There are good churches, so why do we have so little effect? We don't live in a black and white world – politicians have to be elected and stay elected, if they want to be an MP, and compromise is a part of doing that. Politicians and Parliament need wisdom and integrity. Often “the other side” seems to be better organised than we are. We need to be better organised! MPs’ families face strong pressures. Pray for MPs and their families”.

Chester Borrows MP and Ps Rasik Ranchord paid tributes to Eric followed by prayers from Brian Caughley (IFNZ) and Tim Macindoe (MP)

PRAYER POINTERS:

For Christians to be represented in all Parties.

For integrity and wisdom for all MPs.

That our nation’s standards will be based on Biblical principles.

That the Government will be aware of what areas are priority areas.

PRAYER TRACK 2: The Gospel in 2014

Nick Field Senior Pastor of The Street City Church:

Romans 1:16-17. It is 200 years since the Gospel was first preached in New Zealand. The nation has been blessed in times of righteousness but at other times has reaped the fruit of unrighteousness. It is time (it’s always time!) to preach the Gospel and see God at work – followers of Jesus in relationship with Him. We need to demonstrate the Gospel as it should affect the areas of poverty, oppression, violence, immorality, etc. When the Gospel first came it had a positive impact on Maori and was spread by Maori. Wrong beliefs and practices (e.g., utu – revenge) went, as people’s hearts were changed. The Gospel can still bring an end to the evils of today. People must be born again – receive a new heart through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

PRAYER POINTERS:

For boldness to spread the Gospel.

For Christians to see opportunities to serve their communities, and proclaim the Gospel.

For humility and courage to cross boundaries that divide us as followers of Jesus, so that the power of the Gospel is displayed.

PRAYER TRACK 3: A Christian’s Civic Responsibilities

Ps Rasik Ranchord

800,000 people enrolled did not vote in the last elections plus 200,000 did not even enrol making a total of 1 million people i.e. 1 in 3 voters. How many of these missing million were Christians?

He shared from two pamphlets that he has written: ‘Should Christian be involved in Politics?’ also ‘Vote Smart 2014’.

a simple step by step guide to MMP. These pamphlets are available from our website. A third pamphlet, ‘God and Government’ giving a more detailed Biblical analysis will be available soon.

Please let your minister and others know about these resources, they may be downloaded from here or from Rasik's own website here.

PRAYER POINTERS:

For church leaders to motivate their people about their civic duties.

For the leaders of all Parties.

For your local MPs.

For all Christian candidates and MPs.

For retiring MPs and their families; and for all new MPs who will be elected.

For the privileges and responsibilities of living in a democracy.

Our next Prayer @ Parliament will be on Thursday November 6, 2014 due to Election being in September.

The first Prayer @ Parliament for 2014 was held on Thursday March 20 in the Grand Hall. It was well attended. Once again Christians from virtually every major denomination and movement were present.

Representatives from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Hastings, Gisborne, Masterton, Palmerston North, Feilding, Levin, New Plymouth, Upper Hutt, Hutt City, Wellington, Porirua, Kapiti had registered for the Gathering.

The Theme for this year is, “The Gospel and the Government”. There are two major events happening in our Nation that we want to focus on. Firstly this is the bicentenary of the coming of the gospel to our country when Rev Samuel Marsden preached from Luke 2 on Christmas Day 1814 near the Bay of Plenty. It is a time to celebrate, evaluate (how effective we have been) propagate, (strategise and spread) the gospel. Secondly the Prime Minister has announced the date of the General Election, September 20, just 6 months away.

There were 3 Prayer Tracks:

Our final Prayer @ Parliament gathering for 2013 was a great success. The attendance was good, the singing was excellent. This time we were led by The Filipino community Choir. They also sang “The Payer” as a special feature, a song made famous by Andrea Borcelli and Celine Dion. It was powerful and inspiring. the singing filled the whole chamber. This was a real highlight of the evening.

Her excellency Virginia Benevidez the Philippines Ambassador led us in the opening prayer setting the scene for the whole evening. Asenati Lole-Taylor MP and Su’a William Sio MP did the Bible Reading. This time both readings were from the New Testatment (1 Tim 2:1-8 and Eph 2:11-22).

Peseta Sam Lotu Iiga MP deputising for Hon. Chester Borrows MP welcomed the people.

Prayer Track 1: Local Government Election:

David Major a former Wellington City Councellor’s input was both practical and concise. Prayer Pointers were: 1. Christian Candidates who are standing for Councils and District Health Boards. 2. Christians to be informed about the issues and voting wisely. 3. Communities that are facing particular challenges and 4. the challenge facing District health Boards.

Prayer Track 2: NZ MultiCultural Nation

Input was from Ps Rasik Ranchord. The Bible gives us a glimpse of the multicultural vision in Rev 7:9 which talks of redeemed as a great multitude that no one can count from every nation, tribe, people and nation.

Christians should be at the forefront in the issue of harmonious race relation because of our faith. The Bible informs us that every human being is created in the image of God (Gen 1:26,27). Also the Gospel effects a double reconciliation. Vertical reconciliation between God and Man (1Tim 2:3-7) and horizontal between people (Eph 2:11-22).

The first Prayer @ Parliament gathering for the year was held in the Grand Hall on 21 March.

After some heart-felt worship, including the National Anthem, Eric Roy MP opened in prayer.

Sam Lotu-Iiga MP welcomed the audience of around 180 people. He commented that being part of the evening and having just sung New Zealand’s National Anthem gave him peace. He asked attendees to pray for all MPs and those that work in government across the nation.

Convener Pastor Rasik Ranchord then officially opened the meeting with a special welcome to out of town guests including some from Tauranga, Hamilton and Wairarapa. He also acknowledged and welcomed the presence of the Philippines Ambassador to New Zealand H.E Virginia Benavidez.

The first bible reading, Isaiah 40:21-31 was given by Tim Macindoe MP. The second scripture reading, Matthew 5:1-16 was delivered by Alfred Ngaro MP.

Pastor Ranchord thanked MP’s who had voted against the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill and in so doing standing for truth. He asked the participants to continue to uphold these MPs in prayer.

“Our prayer is driven by the word of God and the Spirit of God directs and energises our prayer. If we are not informed with the relevant information we will not be specific or persistent in our prayers” he cautioned. “We need to be passionate and persevering in our prayers,” he stated.

We will need to intercede (Godward) but we also need to be prophetic (manwood). Pastor Ranchord concluded with a comment about taking heed of the Prophets who spoke about a Nation’s morale condition.

There were three Prayer Tracks:

The first track ‘Education – A Christian Perspective’ was led by Wellington College Headmaster, Roger Moses. He commented that we are in a spiritual battle and asked people to pray for a Christian presence in state schools. Prayers were made for Christian leaders to speak boldly, especially concerning moral issues. Attendees also prayed for Christians outside schools to help disadvantaged students and for a compelling Christian voice to compete in a marketplace of ideas.

The second track ‘Jesus All About Hope 2014” is the title of a nationwide outreach project to be launched at Easter next year. Pastor David Mann said it was 30 years since the Gospel has been taken to every home in New Zealand. Now with the help of multiple media, television adverts, booklets, a website, church partnership and a definite strategy, this is the project goal. The Hope Project is part of the bicentenary celebrations planned to commemorate Samuel Marsden preaching the first gospel message on New Zealand soil in 1814.

The third track was the Marriage Amendment Bill.., An Update and a Reflection. Pastor Ranchord outlined the prayer points aimed at ensuring comprehensive and robust protection for all marriage celebrants and church premises, and all conscientious objections.

All three of these tracts were prayed through in small groups.

The next Prayer@Parliament will be in July 2013 the date will be confirmed soon.

The Second Prayer @ Parliament Gathering for the year was held in the Grand Hall on Thursday June 21st 2012.

Once again Christians from many denominations and from the whole region gathered for prayer. People are now coming regularly from Wairarapa. There were representatives from Gisborne, Tauranga, Invercargill, New Plymouth and Auckland.

We mount in the Spirit on the wings of Praise and Prayer. The evening commenced with glorious praise that filled the hall. It has become a tradition to sing all the verses of our National Anthem, surely one of the most inspirational and God honouring anthems in the whole world! It is really prayer set to music.

Jonathan Young MP for New Plymouth opened with prayer. The Gathering was then welcomed by Eric Roy MP who was deputising for Host MP Chester Borrows an ardent supporter of the gathering who was away on this occasion. Eric Roy, the Deputy Speaker of the House is also a very regular attendee at these gatherings. Pastor Rasik Ranchord added his welcome as Convener of the Gathering.

The Old Testament reading from Isaiah 58:6-12 was given by H.E. Virginia Benavidez, The Philippines Ambassador to New Zealand and the New Testament reading from Ephesians 5:21-33 by Alfred Ngaro MP.

There were three Prayer Tracks.

The First Track was for The Officers of the House. Eric Roy MP explained the function of the Speaker then we prayed in small groups for The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith (Speaker); Eric Roy (Deputy Speaker); Lindsay Tisch and Ross Robertson (Assistant Speakers). We also prayed for our Local MPs and the Mayors of our cities. Pastor Hamish Thomson prayed for the MPs present.

Prayer Track 2 was entitled ‘The Growing Divide’. There was a State of the Nation Report from the Salvation Army 2012 from its Social Policy and Parliament Unit. A brief synopsis was presented by Major Wendy Barney. Christians may hold different views on some of the conclusions. You can access it at the following website: salvationarmy.org.nz This was followed again by prayer in small groups.

The Third Track was on The Definition of Marriage. Pastor Rasik informed the Gathering about Louise Wall’s bill seeking to redefine marriage. Christian Leaders and people need to be aware of this and prepare their people accordingly. He read out the Manhatten Declaration prepared by the late Chuck Colson and others. This can be accessed at www.manhattandeclaration.org. It will be brought into the House if it is drawn from the ballot box. People prayed for this very important issue in small groups.

The first Prayer @ Parliament Gathering for the year was held at the Grand Hall. Many came from all major denominations not only from the Wellington Region but also from Wairarapa, Tauranga, Auckland and other places. We were welcomed by Hon Chester Borrows our parliamentary host who has been made aminister for Law Courts and also Pastor Rasik Ranchord as convener of the Gathering.

Pastor Hamish Thomson brought the opening prayer followed by two Bible Readings.

The Old Testament reading was from 1 Kings 3:7-14 and 4:29-34 and it was given by Alfred Ngaro MP.

The New Testament reading was from Matt 18:1-14 and it was given by Ps Jeannie Knott from the Elim International Church.

In the Preparation for Prayer segment Ps Rasik reminded the gathering that the Bible uses the term servant of God in at least 3 ways.

First of all, a servant of God who is mainly involved in work for or within the church e.g. Paul called to be a servant, an apostle.

Secondly, it is used of believers who are involved in the world as King Soloman who described himself a servant of God whose ministry was to rule Israel (i.e. politics).

Thirdly, it is used of unbelievers who fulfil a God-ordained function so in Romans 13 three times those who work in governing are termed servants of God.

The lesson to be drawn from this is that when Paul tells us in 1 Tim 2 to pray for those who are in authority we ought to pray for all MPs whether believers or not because the function they perform namely governing is ordained by God and all authorities derive their power from God.

There were 3 Prayer Tracks.

The First Prayer Track was “Ministers of the Crown”. Hon Chester Borrows shared about the burden of responsibility on Ministers. People were invited to pray for the ministers (their names were on a hand-out sheet).

The Second Prayer Track was, “The Speaker and his Assistants as well as Chair person of Select Committees and the Local MPs of people who were attending”. The Input for this tract was by Tim Macindoe MP for Hamilton West. People then prayed in small groups.

The Third Prayer Track was on a major social issue facing NZ namely, “Child Abuse”. Hon Chester Borrows who is also The Associate Minister for Social Development made the input and again people had an opportunity to pray in small groups.

Brian Caughley, Director for Intercessors for NZ led us in praying for MPs present.
The final prayer for the evening was led by Chris Auchenvole MP.
The Service began and concluded with glorious praise.

A large number of people attended this year’s final gathering. Once again there were people from many denominations from the whole of the Wellington Region and now there are people coming regularly from Wairarapa and also some from other cities like Auckland, Gisborne, Hamilton, Tauranga etc.

The Prayer gathering is prayerfully designed. The vision of Prayer @ Parliament is rooted in two scriptures: 1 Tim 2 and Rom 13, to pray for people in authority; to pray for the larger issues facing our Nation.

The First Prayer Track was on Elections 2011 on 26 November. The input was from Eric Roy long time MP for Invercargill and Assistant Speaker of the House and Pastor Rasik Ranchord who has written a pamphlet, “Should Christians be engaged in Politics and if so to what Extent”. This was followed by prayer in small groups.

The Second Prayer Track was Miscellaneous Prayers led from the front.

They were all outstanding Christians who made a profound impact in their communities and the nation, and in the case of John Stott, the world.

The Third Prayer Track was on Christchurch. This was led by Brian Caughley National Director of Intercessors for NZ. Though the news of Christchurch are no longer on the front pages of our newspapers their needs are even greater now. Commissioner Garth McKenzie former Head of Salvation Army in NZ led the opening prayer. Tricia Caughley, Co-National Director of Intercessors NZ closed in prayer.

The Bible Readings were given by Ps Ronnie Tan and Ps Lalita Ranchord.

The Grand Hall was filled with glorious worship and powerful praying.

The dates for 2012 Prayer Gatherings are yet to be fixed. We have to wait until the Parliament Calendar is finalised in early 2012. Generally Prayer @ Parliament is held in March, June and September.

We take this opportunity to wish you a Blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
